Item Description...
It's 1907 and Addie Sullivan has found work at a lavish estate in Mercy Falls, California. She hopes to discover the truth of her heritage, but when she arrives at Eaton Hall, nothing is as it seems. Not the idyllic family she dreamt of, not the child she was hired to help, not even the aloof man she's immediately attracted to. And the danger she had hoped to escape has followed her, and she soon finds herself turning to Daniel North -- a man she views with suspicion -- for help. If Addie is to realize her own dream, she'll deprive the man she loves of his dream -- his right to the wealth and power of the Eaton name. She must come to realize that God is sufficient even in the hard times, and that getting familial approval is not worth her integrity.

The Lightkeepers Daughter A Mercy Falls Novel by: Colleen Coble
Addie Sullivan was found on the beach after a terrible storm and shipwreck when she was a young girl. The Sullivan's, who lived in the lighthouse, took her in and rasied her as their own child.
Addie discovers her life is a mystery, after assisting an injured stranger, brought in to the lighthouse, she and her mother maintains, during a storm. The stranger insists she isn't Addie Sullivan, but Julia Eaton, a long lost child who was thought by her wealthy family to be dead.
This stranger provides enough information to Addie, alpng with the information she already had to convice her to come live with the Eaton's as governess of their grandson. She is to keep the secret she holds until just tie right time.
Addie, along with John (Mr. Eaton's widowed son-in-law) discovers more clues to her mysterious life in clues she finds around the house and around town. They also discover a relationship building between them.
I enjoyed joining Addie in this adventure, and I think you will too.

My Thoughts:
The Lightkeeper's Daughter by Colleen Coble is one of those books that truly earn the title, A-Feel-Good-Read. It's plot encompasses intrigue, adventure, history and romance, all in a gentle, smooth ride.
Colleen Coble's characters are alive and as diverse as the worlds they inhabit. Set in Northern California in the early 1900's where a person's value depends much on their heritage and social standing, Addie Sullivan is pulled from the realm of poverty to the privileges of wealth and family connections. This would appear to the reader, at first, to be a blessing well deserved. But, I would caution you, that not all facts in this story are as they at first seem. And isn't that why we love to read? Why we appreciate an author who can deceive us, lead us down the primrose path, then give us an ending we never expected.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I recommend you read it on a lazy afternoon when you feel most self-indulgent.
Teaser Snippet:
"To Whom It May Concern, If you are reading this, then I am dead. Or worse. I fear leaving all the evidence in one spot, so I've left it in three places. Sunshine, dust, and pigeons. If you find this, tell no one in this house. Trust no one. Remember me..."

| | | | Overall good romantic historical suspense novel Dec 19, 2009 |
Overall I liked and enjoyed this book. I have read some of her other romantic suspense mystery books set in the present day. She did a good job on the historical aspects in the book including wonderful descriptions. Mercy Falls sounds like a beautiful place. My only problem with the book is the few couple chapters seemed formulaic and the family history was confusing. It took me awhile to keep straight how everyone was related to each other. After that the plot drew me in and I wanted to know what happened next. I stayed up until midnight last night finishing the book. The next Mercy Falls novel will be on my wish list. Recommended. :)

This book is based around the turn-of-the-century, and starts out with the heroine, Addie Sullivan, living on a remote island with her mother, as caretakers of the lighthouse. One day a man shows up with startling news-the people Addie thought were her parents aren't! This begins Addie's trek to find her real heritage, and she soon gains employment far from home as a governess at a wealthy estate. Not long after arriving, danger threatens Addie, and she is forced to turn to her employer for help in solving a decades-old mystery.
I was thrilled when I first knew I would be able to review this book, as I have read quite a few of Colleen Coble's books and really liked them. While this didn't quite live up to my expectations, it was still an enjoyable read. Personally I prefer a mystery where you don't figure out who "the bad guy" is until quite near the end, but I was able to guess this one pretty quickly. The writing in the first third of the book or so seemed a little disjointed, but got much better as it went on. The main theme of the story is about not needing approval from anyone but God. At one point Addie starts to look for approval from other people, but soon realizes that this is wrong. Overall, I did really like the book, and would recommend it to others.

Summery: Addie Sullivan lives a quiet life in a California lighthouse. After the recent death of her father, Addie feels the unloved and unwanted. Until one stormy night in 1907, when a injured stranger comes knocking on the lighthouse door with a secret that turns Addie's world upside down. Believed to be the the long, lost daughter of Henry Eaton, Addie goes to the Eaton estate, as a governess, looking for the truth. While keeping her identity a secret, Addie finds a love like no other but dark force are at work. Romance,Suspense, Mystery, even action, all against the beautiful backdrop of the California redwoods
Overview: Though the first several chapters of The Lightkeepers Daughter lacks realistic feeling, the historical detail and suspenseful mystery, keep the readers interest. By chapter seven, things gets much better. When conflict is thrown into the plot, the characters seem to come to life. Addie's faith in God wavers but never goes out, even in the face of malicious intentions. The mystery is thrilling and will keep you guessing till the end. Mrs. Coble weaves God through out the plot in such away that, your faith is challenged and strengthened. The truth of the words lasting long after you've finished the book. A nice beach read that will grip the reader from chapter seven, on.
