Reviews - What do our customers think?
Riveting  Nov 18, 2006
'Hostage' is an intense book from start to finish. It contains action, drama, and classic courtroom confrontations.

It begins with terrorists seeking revenge against Lt. Zach Brewer and Lt. Diane Colcernian for the prosecution of some of their cohorts. The terror group also has more moles in the U.S. Navy plotting additional mayhem.

It is a sequel to 'Treason'. A lot of the events and characters are tied into happenings from the first book. I would definitely recommend reading 'Treason' first. Without doing so, I think readers would be missing quite a bit.

I think that this one is even better than the first book. It is extremely well written and keeps the reader on the edge of his/her seat.

So good, it makes me want to be a JAG!  May 13, 2006
I'm going to be very honest...Greatest book I have ever read! What's amazing about Brown's writing is that it is in so much detail and is easy to understand. Even if you know nothing about the justice system in either the civilian or military courtrooms, he makes it easy to follow. It's the only book I have ever read that I've actually held my breath just waiting to see what was coming up next. I've actually put the book down, and stared at it for about five minutes debating whether I should pick it back up and read it, even though I was late for work. This, as well as its prequel "Treason," is worth the read, hands down, but you have to read the prequel first.

I do want to mention something said about the "Anti-Islamic" message being sent. One has to realize that this series is about terrorist attacks by Muslims, thus it's going to make them look pretty bad. I must say that I am neither Christian nor Muslim. HOWEVER, when I read this book, I didn't just all of a sudden say "Oh wow. These Muslims are really bad people. Let's not trust them." Is the series harsh on religions? Yes, but not so much that it will convert you.

If you know how to separate real life from fiction, then I believe that this is certainly worth the read.

An Addictive Page Turner  May 12, 2006
I'd been a JAG fan before I read Don Brown's first book, Treason. When I read Treason, I realized that was better than the TV Show, and so naturally I couldn't wait to read Hostage.

When I read it, I literally was up two solid nights, drinking coffee because I could not put the thing down! If my husband knew what I was thinking about Zack Brewer, he would divorce me! Treason was excellent, and Hostage was maybe even a little bit better!

Seriously, this book is written in simple, yet powerfully effective prose. Mr. Brown is a master storyteller who writes in short chapters and leaves the reader hanging at every turn! I'm mad at him for making me lose two nights of sleep.

ONe other thing that I love about this book is that Mr. Brown writes military fiction that is interesting to women. Everything is understandable and not too technical. Plus the court martial scenes in this book, and also in Mr. Brown's first book, Treason, are far better than anything I've seen either on television or in the movies.

There's an inspirational element, but not too much. Plus you'll see that Mr. Brown is definitely not predictable, and I love that.

Highly, highly recommended.

Anti-Islamic Overtones Anyone??  Apr 26, 2006
Am I the only one who could see the profoundly anti-Islamic bent that shone through so clearly to me? Every single Islamic person in this book was portrayed as a terrorist. In many cases, a character would be cast into suspicion simply because of how the color of their skin gave away their religious affiliation, and the author seemed to endorse this as an acceptable practice. When the captain of the USS Truman was accused of just this kind of racial profiling in a court of law, never once did the author use a character in the book to condemn this overt racism. The underlying message of the book seemed to be that every muslim in the US Armed Forces is a potential terrorist and, therfore, Muslims should not be allowed to serve in the military. All Muslim authority figures (Abdur Rahman, Hussein Al-Akhma) were portrayed as zealots who nonetheless reneged on all of their religious observances (eg. they drink wine, contemplate sexual misconduct etc). Not one positively portrayed Muslim character can be found in this book. On a personal note, I am not Muslim, I am an evangelical Christian. What scares me is how easily a non-Christian reader could pick up the same undercurrents that I did and assume that all Christians think in this bigoted way. This a characterization that the Christian community does not need. It is important that we work to foster a positive, tolerant image and propaganda like this goes 180 degrees to this goal. The scariest element of this book is that it is so well written, with a story that kept me turning the pages long after I should have gone to bed or back to work. The subtle way in which this book wove its subversive message into a page-turning adventure keenly reminds me of The DaVinci Code. The ideas contained in this book are no less explosive or wrong. Christiansm Do yourself and others a favor and DO NOT recommend Hostage to your non-Christian friends, and, if you feel that you must read it, check your theology at the door, cuz it won;t line up here. If you don't share my faith in Jesus Christ and you read this book, let me apologize on behalf of all believers, we don't all think this way.

Great Book! Treason and Hostage are Winners!  Jan 16, 2006
The second book in this sequel was as good or better than the first book. A story that speaks to our times and a character with the courage to face it!

I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves courtroom drama and has an interest in current world affairs.
