 | Baller Bible May 7, 2010 |
| Love everything about this Bible. Great translation. Great cover. Awesome printing and page opacity. It's just awesome! | | | | I love it! May 1, 2010 |
Well, it's a Bible, so that's good. =)
But I love the ESV translation. I like it better than the NIV and NKJV. And I think the English is easier to understand. I've been to small groups and when I read out of it, others say they like my translation (the ESV) a lot and ask what translation it is. And it looks amazing on the outside.
It's the perfect size, not too big, not too small, and not heavy. And it has several maps in the back.
If you haven't read from an ESV Bible before, check it out, I think you'll like it. Go on Biblegateway or something. This is not meant to be a long review. I'm just excited about it. | | | | Disapointed Apr 4, 2010 |
| I was very disapointed with my purchase. Nowhere was I told the bible had markings and highlights in it. The bible also smells like smoke......VERY dissapointed and was not informed of these things. Will not buy from this individual again. Do NOT recommend. | | | | Great translation, substandard printing and binding Mar 26, 2010 |
Just got this Bible in the mail yesterday. I was familiar already with the ESV translation, and (being one who prefers the authoritative, majestic read and sound of the KJV) I chose the ESV because it has a similar literary feel to it that the KJV does (not sure I'll ever use ESV as my primary Bible, but I like it). I'm not here, though, to comment on translation.
I'm here to comment on the manufacture of this edition. This Bible quite frankly feels cheap from the moment you open it. The pages have that dry newspaper-paper feel to them and the ink on the paper smudges, whereas the Thomas Nelson (TN)-published KJV Ultraslim Bible that is my basis for comparison here (and my most frequently utilized Bible) does not. This Crossway thinline is printed on thin paper like the TN KJV, but this Crossway version uses different paper that is just a teeny tiny bit thicker. If you use a dry Bible highligher, you will notice that the ink easily rubs and smudges in this Crossway ESV Thinline. That is my biggest complaint here, and I think that's a big deal. That just tells me this is printed cheaply and without care, since my TN-published KJV slimline does not have smudgeable ink, yet the paper is thinner and the print finer.
Also, as I mentioned, the paper itself feels cheap, as does the cover. While the cover is a handsome design of the Crown of Thorns Christ wore, the cover material is this cheap, dry [to the touch], non-leather rubbish material that I hope Crossway exchanges for imitation or genuine bonded leather in future editions, because this cover isn't worth writing home about. Again, neat idea for a cover design, but the cover material is crummy.
The binding: as soon as I opened this Bible I was immediately able to see the stitching of the binding, which worries me. My KJV Ultraslim has held up to a lot of use and I have yet to see a stitch. But this Crossway Slimline... it worries me that the LONGevity of this Bible will not be very, well, LONG with this binding. Again, cheaply bound. An upshot to the cheap binding is that the Bible lays open to almost every book and chapter without effort or external influence. But then again, better-bound Bibles by Thomas Nelson also do that, so Crossway doesn't have much to brag about.
The silver-edged pages are nice. Have to say that. Really goes nicely with the dull (not dull in the negative sense) black, embossed cover.
One other thing: this isn't really my idea of "slim". My TN KNV Ultraslim is about .75 in, which is pretty thin. This is compact, but at 1.3in, it's not very "slim". Even in the box it came in the TN KJV Ultraslim is thinner than this Bible OUTSIDE of its box. So, that is disappointing.
I am happy this only cost me only $19 and change. I would recommend it as a gift Bible, or as a Bible that will not be heavily used for study, or heavily used at all... just maybe as a translation cross-comparison or something. Otherwise, buy an ESV (if that's the version you're looking for... which I imagine it is if you're reading this) of better construction/manufacture... and one with ink that doesn't smudge.
I'm giving this two stars because the cover design is nice, it lays flat, and the ESV translation is good (IMO). But the two stars are given somewhat grudgingly because I don't feel it's right to give a Bible--no matter how shoddy the construction is--one star.

| This Bible was exactly as described. The cover is thin and flexible which I liked and the font size was the perfect size. I would purchase this gift in the future as a gift for sure. | | | Write your own review about ESV Classic Thinline Bible-RL-Brown/Tan TruTone
