Item Description... Overview Retells in comic book format the story of Jesus, along with an account of young John Mark--the future evangelist, Saint Mark--at the time of the Crucifixion and Resurrection.
Publishers Description Some of Britain’s finest English comics artists of all time, including Frank Hampson (creator of Dan Dare) and Frank Bellamy (creator of Heros the Spartan) also produced strips for the classic British comic Eagle based on stories from the Bible.
Now, for the first time ever, all these Bible Stories are being collected, beginning with Frank Hampson’s Road of Courage, the life story of Jesus, and Mark: The Youngest Disciple, the story of the man who wrote the first New Testament gospel to be circulated.
Lavishly reproduced, presented in a high-quality hardback library format, the book also includes supporting material on the background to the bible stories featured in the strips and background on the development of the early Christian church, plus features on the how the strips themselves were created
“Road to Courage is a vibrant testament to the dedication, power, and sheer artistry of Frank Hampson.” -- Win Wiacek
Frank Hampson was a gifted artist who sold his first commission at the age of thirteen. In 1946, he was hired as art director on Eagle for which he created Dan Dare – a strip he was to write and draw for the next ten years. The Road of Courage was Hampson’s final full-length comic strip.
Marcus Morris was the founder of Eagle. A former vicar, he went on to become the chairman of the National Magazine Company.
Chad Varah was the founder of the The Samaritans, a charity aimed at providing emotional support to anyone in distress or at risk of suicide throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Giorgio Bellavitis worked on Eagle from 1945–1958, before returning to Italy to pursue a career in architecture.

 | Marvelous! May 14, 2010 |
Illustrated Bible stories are becoming more common. A quick search will reveal dozens of illustrated bibles and/or books of the Bible. This Titan book, "Classic Bible Stories", is somewhat of an oddity in that it is not a new edition, but rather a reprint of two separate tales by Frank Hampton, Marcus Morris, Chad Varah and Giorgio Bellavitas.
"The Road of Courage" and "the Youngest Disciple" are reprinted, yet originally appeared in Eagle in 1960 and 1958 respectively. The strips are breath-takingingly beautiful and accurate to the King James translations. Story telling liberties have been taken only to turn the story of Yeshua, and Johanan Marcus into a more compelling (if it needed that), easy to follow narrative. Morris and Varah succeeded. Hampton and Bellavitas illustrate the strips with passion and a technical skill that few artists have possessed. I particularly enjoy the architectural backgrounds that Bellavitas provides and the classy human figures of Hampton. Mr Hampton even took a trip to the Holy Land to provide historical accuracy for his settings!
Presumably, this is the first book in a new series. That is great news as I enjoyed the book immensely. This is my first exposure to this great literature (in this version), and I was blessed.
Thank you Titan (and Eagle).
