Outline
Not to be confused with the collection Songs Inspired by the Chronicles of Narnia, this album is Harry Gregson-Williams' instrumental score for the movie. Marking the composer's third collaboration with director Andrew Adamson (after both Shrek movies), this score also is one of the more mature offerings from Gregson-Williams, best known for his work on family films. The music is lush and assured, if a bit predictable. Indeed, it fits squarely in the current style popular for big epics--even using (on a few tracks) the vocals of Lisbeth Scott, which fall halfway between those of Enya and the Cocteau Twins' Liz Fraser (both of whom, uncoincidentally, appeared on the Lords of the Rings soundtracks). The CD concludes with four songs, with Gregson-Williams cowriting "Where." On "Can't Take It In," Imogen Heap's vocal acrobatics eerily recall those of the Cranberries' Dolores O'Riordan, while Alanis Morissette's "Wunderkind" is an inspirational, almost girl-powerish track written from the point of view of the movie's Lucy. But the best of these songs is "Winter Light" by Tim Finn, four minutes of understated, piano-driven melancholia. Look for it tucked near the very end of the CD. The second disc in this special edition package is a DVD that includes galleries of film stills and concept art, a featurette about the recordings of the score and a making-of featurette. There's also a segment in which the (mostly) Christian bands involved in the Songs Inspired by... album talk about their contributions to that project. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

The soundtrack is absolutely astounding. You can listen to it for hours without growing tired of it. It reminds you that we each need to always strive to attain our best and watch out for the welfare of thers.

Not just for children  Aug 20, 2006
This is wonderful story-telling, engaging without being cloying, a fantasy with realistic principles, not to mention relationships. The four Pevensie children are no strangers to anyone who has ever cared for or even known children, a true family, with its ups and downs, love and squabbles, falling and forgiveness, and we are invited to share their adventures in joining the fight led by a regal and courageous lion named Aslan, against a witch queen who has held the land in fear and cold for decades. All is informed by a lovely, haunting, and often stirring soundtrack, which is included individually, and which could quite possibly stand on its own without having accompanied a movie. Both are so well done that we become unaware that we are being ushered into a Narnian world, coursing through storybook adventure, a tribute to the author and also to all those whose hard work and dedication combined to make an experience and a world so winning and complete as to be well worth revisiting, as often as one wishes.

Soundtrack DVD vs. Second movie DVD  Jul 22, 2006
This is what I would call a good soundtrack. I am not writing this review for the music of the Narnia soundtrack, because there are enough of these already. You should be able to form an opinion of it by reading other people's reviews. But, I do REALLY like it! There was some information that I needed, when I was buying my soundtrack, regarding which edition of soundtrack I should get. If I had the information I needed, I probably would not have bought the special edition soundtrack I ended up getting. I got it because I found a good deal, on this site actually, and I wanted to compare the DVD to the second DVD in the special edition movie, which we own. So...this is the information I needed, a comparison.

Soundtrack DVD

1. Film art gallery is good, if you like film art, although I thought it was boring.
2. Concept art gallery I find boring so to be honest I didn't watch it on this DVD since I looked at it in the book.
3. Behind the Magic of Narnia is all on the website except an interview with the composer which was quite good.
4. Theatrical trailer is on the website. You can actually get more trailers on the website for free.
5. Music inspired by the film I believe is all on the website also.

Movie DVD

1. Chronicles of a director was very funny and informative and fascinating.
2. The children's magical journey was also hilarious and you really get to know the children's personalities.
3. C.S. Lewis: From one man's mind was an interesting movie bio on C.S. Lewis.
4. Cinematic Storyteller's is an extremely interesting view of the movie from eight different minds; this also has an interview with the composer which is different from the Soundtrack DVD and very good.
5. Creating creatures was a FACSINATING look at the world of creatures both costume and CGI (computer generated images).
6. Anatomy of a scene: the melting river is all interesting ...

If you haven't guessed already, I could go on for a long time because there is much more but in the interest of brevity I will wrap it up. I enjoyed the movie DVD much more than the soundtrack DVD. The special edition soundtrack is not worth your money new. I would spend my money on the movie and not the extra DVD with the soundtrack although I love the soundtrack itself and think it is well worth the money.
