Believing for God's Best, Joel Osteen An Interview with Joel Osteen
Q: Do you have a hero?
A: Of course, my greatest hero is Jesus Christ. He should be everyone's greatest hero. However, among men, I have two real heroes. My father, John Osteen, was not only the best father anyone could ever have, but was my best friend as well. He was a man of great integrity, and he taught me how important it was to incorporate Jesus Christ into every part of my life. Another of my heroes is Billy Graham who throughout the years has remained true to that which God called him to do and has done so with the utmost dedication, humility, and integrity.
Q: In today's conflicted world, how do you encourage people to maintain their faith?
A: As believers we should be assured that Jesus said He would never leave us nor forsake us. We should adopt a mindset that God wants to be involved in our everyday lives, through good times and difficult times. We should communicate with God throughout our day (to pray without ceasing), not just when we are in crisis. He cares about our lives even in the small things. There is no part of our lives that are insignificant to Him.
Q: What did working behind the scenes at Lakewood during your father's ministry inform how you preach today?
A: Really it all started for me when I was born. Our family never missed church; Sunday morning, Sunday night and Wednesday night, week in and week out. However, for 17 years I did produce and edit my fathers sermons for television. I often joke that I attended one year of college and 17 years of seminary. For those 17 years, I would have to study my father's weekly sermons and then cut them down to a 28-minute TV program while maintaining the message. I guess I've listened to at least 1,500 of my fathers messages.
Q: Your ministry reaches millions each week through television and the Internet. How has technology changed how people worship today?
A: Through telecommunications technology, especially the web, more Christian programming is available than ever before. Not only do people have more choices in Christian programming, but they can get as much as they want whenever they want it. I think that our use of technology results in people spending more of their time thinking about the things of God. However, I don't see technology replacing worship in the traditional sense--that is worshipping with other believers in a church. Everyone should belong to a good Bible-based church.
Q: In our busy lives, what is your advice for how we can slow things down and find peaceful moments?
A: Personally, I take time each morning to spend with God. I have a quiet place in my home or I find a quiet place if I am traveling where I pray and seek guidance from God. I think that is the best way for anyone to start their day; it really sets the tone for each day.
Q: As a father, what advice would you share with parents struggling with our fast-paced culture?
A: Victoria and I decided a long time ago that our family takes priority over most everything else. I tell people all the time that their families should be their first mission field. Today, it takes a great deal of our time and energy to make a living. We need to make sure our families don't get the short end of the stick and we need to make time for them. And, I am talking about "quality time"; no cell phones, no business calls, no outside distractions, just family.

| The book came in a timely manner and I cant put it done. A great read and re-read | | | | "Become a Better You" is good for the soul!!!! Apr 25, 2010 |
Joel Osteen's "Become a Better You" is a useful tool for spiritual enlightenment. And if you take some moments in your life to reflect and administer the advice he shares, your life can and probably will turn out for the better. This book will help you through the turmoil and stresses of everyday life, leading you to a more salubrious lifestyle.
Osteen's no-nonsense (Tony Robbin's) approach to religion is what everyone should ascribe them-selves to. And it's ashame that many people will think the religious messages presented in this book are unrealistic, impractical, and just downright fanciful, but the truth is if every person in the world embraced Osteen's altruistic message then the world would be a better place.
Osteen demonstrates throughout this book that it's the negative choices we make which are our undoing. The true definition of sin is negative choices that create negative impact, which the environment around suffers the consequences thereof. In other words what you do affects other people. Osteen thoroughly explains that we have to ask God to help us to clean up our act and once we accomplish that goal we'll be ready and able to serve him and others. As Joel Osteen said "Don't magnify your problem; magnify your God." And he also said "When you show love, you are showing God to the world."
In my past reviews I've stated I wasn't a religious person, but getting Joel's perspective on things allowed me to have a change of heart, and after reading this book you will too.
Joel uses the scriptures throughout this book and successfully makes his point clear and the "7 Keys to Improving Your Life Every Day" will lead you in Jehovah God's direction.
I recommend that you read this along with your Bible and the Gospel of Mary Magdalene.
5 Stars!!! | | | | The bad aspects outshadow the rare points of substance Mar 28, 2010 |
| There are a few points (adopt better habits , focus on your passion) I liked, but the author beats around the bush too much. This book could be compressed to one page and still have redundancy in it. There is no sense of direction because Osteen tries to connect every little idea with God and rambles too much in an uncoordinated dialog with the reader. I cannot give this book more than one star. | | | | 7 Keys to Improving Your Life Every Day-REALLY??? Mar 24, 2010 |
Joel Osteen is a good looking guy and a decent preacher, has a nice smile and a big church, but his message in this book is not that special. Here's the outline:
1. Keep Pressing Forward 2. Be Positive Toward Yourself 3. Develop Better Relationships 4. Form Better Habits 5. Embrace The Place Where You Are 6. Develop Your Inner Life 7. Stay Passionate About Life
Nothing inherently wrong with the book. It has some interesting stories and makes some good points, but lacks originality or much solid Christian doctine. Like any of Donald Trump's books, I read this and had the constant feeling that the book was simply part of a larger marketing plan which I had paid into. While not a waste of time, I enjoyed Rick Warren's The Purpose Driven Life and Covey's The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People more and believe them both to be more powerful and more significant to the field of self-improvement. | | | | nothing but the crud Mar 24, 2010 |
The kind of victory God has promised is an eschatological victory; that is, we will be victorious over the powers of hell as we find the completion of God's work in us on the renewed earth.
God does not promise us victory during this life, at least not the kind that Osteen preaches. There is no promise of good relationships. No promise of being well-liked. No promise of financial certainty. But there is the privilege of service Christ and
This is a man who never finished college, never attended seminary and has no other formal training in Scripture, theology, exegesis, hermeneutics, Church history or anything else that a pastor needs to have this kind of authority. His preaching is as shallow as a kiddie pool and about as theological. He is, quite simply, a fraud. He doesn't know it, but that's what he is.
I would suggest reading Bonhoeffer's "The Cost of Discipleship" where he discusses cheap grace as opposed to costly grace. Osteen pales in comparison. Joel Osteen is the worst kind of example from the contemporary church. He preaches a shallow faith with no substantial connection to historical orthodoxy.
This book is, pure and simple, not a Christian book, even in the self-help category. It is vapid, devoid of sound exegesis. Essentially, Osteen doesn't end up affirming anything distinctive about Christianity.
