My parents are fans of Ken Ham, and use him as their source for their scientific knowledge. I'm definitely not a fan of his, but at my parent's request, I've watched some of the Answers in Genesis DVDs and I've just read part of this book. This book is simply appalling and I'll doubt I'll finish it. Ken Ham's fundamental lack of knowledge in science is jaw dropping. His understanding of genetics is limited to Mendelian methods of simple dominant and recessive genes. Although Mendel made revolutionary discoveries for his time, Mendelian genetics do not explain a wide spectrum of human traits. He represents skin color in this fashion, which proves that he is not a source for any self respecting person to learn science from. There are actually six different genes for determining skin color, in a much more complicated fashion than I suppose Ham understands.
Another representation of Ham's failure to understand genetics is his depiction on how we have such a large variety of dogs.
One major moral rejection I have with the book is the notion that non-Christians aren't allowed to marry Christians - a direct contradiction to the authors' supposed non-bigoted attitudes.

After perusing the eight reviews that are posted for this book as of June 20, 2009 I can honestly say that I may be the only reviewer that has read this book.
Ken Ham's point in the book is this (made in this quote by a quite famous evolutionary scientist):
"Biological arguments for racism may have been common before 1859, but they increased by orders of magnitude following the acceptance of evolutionary theory." - Stephen Jay Gould (Ontogeny and Phylogeny - 1977)(p. 15)
That's what Ham is saying.
At no point does he remotely excuse the "Christian" excuses for racism that were common in the 18th and 19th centuries.
At no point does he claim that Darwin invented racism.
He correctly notes that scientists used any number of ways to measure human racial groupings and rank them (head size, brain weight, etc.) in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Hitler used those biological arguments to justify his genocides against the Jews, gypsies and everyone else he hated.
In my master's program that I completed two summers ago I saw similar research done to explain low achievement rates by African-Americans in school. Seriously. I think it's junk but it's out there.
Even the co-discoverer of DNA, Dr. James Watson weighs in with a bit of old-fashioned scientific racism: "There is no firm reason to anticipate that the intellectual capicities of peoples geographically seperated in their evolution should prove to have evolved identically. Our wanting to reserve equal powers of reason as some universal heritage of humanity will not be enough to make it so." (October 2007) (p. 55) Search it - I typed in his name and got lots of articles about it.
Science-based racism does exist because of this old line: "Figures don't lie but liars figure." Science generates lots of facts and figures and they can be twisted to say just about anything.
Does that mean all scientists are racists? Certainly not! Ham never claims it.
So, why only the three stars?
Ken Ham and his co-author A. Charles Ware wrote the book in turns - each wrote different chapters. I give the part that Hame wrote 4 stars. It was interesting and I found it to be quite well-written - a lively style with numerous quotes.
The part written by Ware was tedious to me. It was an important topic but full of cutesy lines like needing to move beyond " 'race' relations to the unity of grace relations". (p. 136) He also has lots of lists and constructions like D.R.E.A.M.S. to help you remember how to build a multicultural church (a laudible goal but the text was ... rather bland). The racism and greed that fed the slave trade in colonial America is "the chicken." The egg that followed was "Darwinism" in the 1800's to "modern Evolution" of today. In the past racists failed to believe the Bible's account of only one race: THE HUMAN RACE

I visited Ken Ham's Creation Museum earlier this year. I visited out of pure curiosity. Ken Ham gave a speech, and he did not beat around the bush regarding this fact: the Museum and the material therein are primarily religious, not scientific. Ken Ham's writings are generated by religions motivation, not real scientific inquiry.
On to the book at hand - "Darwin's Plantation" argues that racism is not biblical, but is a product of evolutionary theory. These statements are made:
"We're all created by God."
"We're all in God's image."
"We're all one family."
"We're all loved by God."
Sounds great! Sounds REALLY great! I commend Ham for his alleged efforts to cross racial lines. Christianity in America has fostered division rather than unity along racial lines for too long. Unfortunately, however, the old divisive fundamentalist mentality rears up its ugly head and the book stops short of celebrating and embracing all of God's diverse creation. Ham and Ware could not finish the book without making their stabs at God's gay and lesbian children.
In the Appendix, Charles Ware's argument against those who claim that the Bible does not condemn monogamous homosexual relationships is simply, "That's just not true." No in-depth examination of the biblical text or its historical/cultural context. Only a dogmatic statement that it's "just not true." He then attributes the rise of HIV to gay men (but says nothing of the fact that lesbian women are rarely ever infected with the virus). He plays the scapegoat card on God's lesbian and gay children by stating that U.S. citizens continue to pay (literally with money) for research, etc., to stop the spread of HIV. Obviously, the book is a far cry from unifying God's children.
The book is typical Ken Ham propaganda. Fear-driven and guilt-inducing dogma that does nothing to demolish the divisive barriers in the human race.
If you're a fundamentalist Christian who fears stepping outside of the fundamentalist box and thinking for yourself, and if you're looking for yet another book to pacify your religious insecurities, then you will probably soak this book in like a sponge.
If you're looking for real scholarship, or something for real spiritual growth, look elsewhere because this book will be a waste of your precious time. | | | | Respect is key May 5, 2008 |
| This shouldn't be about bashing Ken Ham's belief in Creation. The reason so many people are hostile towards Creationism is that they have not done enough research. If you truely research this topic, you will find more scientific evidence to support Creation. Don't let the unbelief of others and lies from the media turn you away from Truth.
