Outline
Welcome to Grouchland, U.S.A., place of a thousand stenches. This is where everyone's favorite red monster winds up when he stars in his first feature film, The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland. Elmo learns a lesson when he refuses to share his blanket with his best friend, Zoe, then loses it in Oscar's can, where it goes all the way to Grouchland. There the beloved blanket winds up in the clutches of the greediest man alive, Huxley (played by Mandy Patinkin), and Elmo has to venture alone to Huxley's lair to get it back. The Sesame Street gang follows Elmo but ends up in the Grouchland jail. Fortunately, whenever things start looking too bleak, our hosts Ernie and Bert stop the film and offer reassurance. There are also numerous opportunities for audience participation (canned kids' voices will prevent parents from feeling too silly when viewing at home). This 73-minute film has plenty to entertain the youngsters as well as details and inside jokes for parents. And of course there are marvelous animated effects--although seeing Elmo dance in 1999 isn't quite as remarkable as it was to see Kermit ride a bicycle in 1977's The Muppet Movie. The songs are fun and bouncy, and veteran performers Patinkin and Vanessa Williams (as the Queen of Trash) contribute their exceptional talent. The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland was conceived as a film kids could see in theaters; in the safe environs of home, it's good fun for anyone over the age of 2, or even younger in small doses. --David Horiuchi

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Good opening song   Jan 26, 2008
My son is 20 months and so far he is only interested in the first 10 minutes or so - the opening scene of Elmo in his bedroom and the song "Together Forever". He isn't interested in anything after the laundromat scene. But he really loves the first scene when Elmo leans forward and "sees" the audience and says hello. He will point at Elmo's blanket when he is looking for it. I think the "Together forever" song is cute and find myself humming it. Maybe when my son is older he will like the rest although some people think the "evil" parts might teach kids the wrong thing. But kids need to see what's bad and learn that its bad and how to deal with bad people.

Holds my kids captive!  Dec 23, 2007
I found this movie in a bargain bin at a department store and bought it without knowing if my kids would like it. They *loved* it! We get a little exercise singing and dancing to the songs, and my kids learn about sharing at the same time.

Mandy Patinkin, who also stars in A Princess Bride as the person looking for the six-fingered man, does a wonderful job playing the mean-old Huxley. I love the eyebrows! As the bugs suggest, he might want to take a weed wacker to them.

An equally well-done Sesame Street movie similar to this one is Follow That Bird. If you like this movie, you will probably like that one, too.

great movie  Oct 29, 2007
this movie was great, my son of 2 loves it very much and it was very entertaining to even my husband and myself

I wish there were more Elmo movies! Both my daughter & I love this one!  Oct 29, 2007
Like many other reviewers, this was probably the first real movie my daughter wanted to watch (and watch, and watch - for a few months straight!). The great thing about this one, is it's like the Shrek movies in that there are subtle jokes intertwined throughout that are geared towards adults, so I really didn't mind watching this. You can't go wrong with this movie - I just wish there were more like it!

Wonderfully Crafted!  Oct 8, 2007
My daughter is a year and a half. She cannot go one day without watching this movie at least once. She became obsessed with Elmo after seeing this movie at her cousin's house so I had to buy it. I was amazed that such a young little girl could watch a full length movie and understand it. She would cry when Elmo would lose his blanket or when the bad guy came on. Now she knows the movie almost word for word and sings the songs. This is the best for when i have to work at home and still keep an eye on her. I only wish Sesame Street would make more Elmo movies so we could get a break from this one! This was the best $9 I ever spent on her!
