Overview
Pastor James MacDonald looks at different types of trials people experience and explains that times of tribulation refine Christians, often in so many ways that they can't even see.

Publishers Description

When life is hard, you know, really hard, we often spend all our time pleading, begging, yelling, refusing, and questioning. While none of these things are necessarily unusual, they are missing the ultimate point. When life is hard, when things get ugly, when all hope seems to be lost… that is when we are able to display the superiority of the life lived in God.

It is in those moments of despair, when we question what is happening, when we don’t know what to do, when some trials never…seem…to…end, that we can lean most heavily into God’s promises and truths.

Working his way through five questions we've all had run through our heads trusted pastor James MacDonald helps us to understand what we should do now. We begin the journey by looking at different types of "trials" and figuring out exactly what we're dealing with and recognizing that God certainly knows. Second, the obvious question: "Why?" God sees us going through trials and we long for two things: for them to be over and to know why they happened in the first place. Next, we need to know what to do with these trials when they come (and they will most certainly come). Fourth, we have all wondered it, can trials be refused? Are God's purposes really being fulfilled in the midst of this trying time? And lastly, God reveals Himself to us through these trials. . . and sometimes, they just don't ever end. Why doesn't this trial go away?

God refines us. Often in so many ways that we can't even see. Should we just try to weather the storm? Or is there something greater in God's vision for these difficulties?

God told us to expect trials—don’t be surprised when they come (they are on purpose). Grow when they come. Find hope when they come.

When Life Is Hard .  Jun 7, 2010
I would highly recomend this book as we did this at our church deciple class and I learned a lot about my self from this book. If anyone wants to know when times are hard and we don't understand sometimes but we are called to a higher faith in God through the trials or "Hard Times In Life. It teaches the truth and we can therefore understand why. This writer has several books on this related subject that I too would recomend.

God's Direction  May 7, 2010
Whether you have a profound terminal illness, loss of a job, family member, or any stress, this book is worth your time and effort, because it's NOT just another self help Christian book. Self help is the opposite of what MacDonald really reveals when going through hard times. MacDonald's approach is that God is in control of all your circumstances, and He knows your plight in life, and He hears your prayers. The lord has you exactly where He wants you: self-helpless, so He may gain control in your life! Using scripture, MacDonald transforms your way of thinking to find that peace and tranquility through Christ that aides in the development of greater Christian maturity. He touches the emotions yet conveys biblical truth and prayer throughout its message. "When Life is Hard" is a book that guides you through the stages in growing in your faith and maturing in your perspective as you go through the storms of life simply by living through it for the glory of the Lord. This book makes it easier to go through the transitions of hard times to the future glory that will soon be revealed in your life.

Practical and Lucid  Apr 16, 2010
This is the perfect book for those who feel that they are somehow failing in their faith, or that God is somehow failing them, when they encounter seasons of suffering and difficulty in life. When I hear Christian teaching that promises that everything will be sunshine and rainbows if you have enough faith, I wonder two things:

1 - Where on earth do they get this idea in the first place, since Christ suffered and died and most of the apostles were martyred after living lives of persecution and imprisonment?

2 - Even if they believe it, how do they reconcile it with day to day reality in a suffering, broken world?

The book outlines a solidly biblical perspective on suffering and pain, one that will help you abandon distorted images of God that can plunge you into despair when the storms of life inevitably show up. No book can give a tidy, comprehensive answer to the problem of pain (you might even argue some theological points with MacDonald), but there are some liberating foundational principles and essential truths in this book that all Christians should be able to agree on.

When Life Is Hard  Apr 11, 2010
"When Life Is Hard" by James MacDonald is a great and encouraging read for the Christian who is going through some kind of trial (relational, health, career, etc.).

Among the points covered include:

1. 3 things to remember when in a trial.
2. One of the fruits of genuine believers is that you endure hardships.
3. 2 good benefits of trials.
4. 4 actions to take when in a trial.
5. 4 ways to respond to a trial.
6. When in a trial, be careful of discouragement, dislocation, and bitterness.
7. 5 things to consider when going through a trial.
8. The devil wants to use our trial to paralyze us while God wants to use the trial for our own good.
9. 2 things to do when you are living with your "thorn".

MacDonald pulls no punches: trials are not necessarily fun to endure and they are sure to come to the Christian. However, with God's grace, you will endure and glorify God in the process.

Highly recommended.

Good Can Come Out of Bad  Mar 14, 2010
Life's trials can work either two ways. They either amplify your weaknesses or they make you strong. It's all dependant on your relationship with God. This book helps you to get to the place in your life that you lean on God during a trial or loss. MacDonald's style is warm and inviting and he will lead you into a safe place through the storms of life.
