Outline There's something about this film that's so irresistible, despite its grandiose manipulation. Maybe because it recounts the greatest air battle in history, achieving the greatest aerial battle in film history. Maybe because it has such a terrific cast (Harry Andrews, Michael Caine, Trevor Howard, Curt Jurgens, Laurence Olivier, Nigel Patrick, Christopher Plummer, Michael Redgrave, Ralph Richardson, Robert Shaw, Patrick Wymark, and Edward Fox). Maybe because it's so technically well-made, thanks to the Bond team of producer Harry Saltzman and director Guy Hamilton and the great cinematographer Freddie Young. Or maybe because there is something truly riveting about watching the British kick the Nazis back to Germany. --Bill Desowitz

 | Reviewing the BoB Collector's Edition Apr 9, 2010 |
The transfer is fine: It's no better than the earlier DVD edition, but yards ahead of the VHS. Since I've seen this so many times, I chose to listen to the commentary right out of the box. While director Guy Hamilton's comments were insightful, especially about his relationship with Adolf Galland, Bernie Williams(who was the production manager of the aerial unit) was all over the map. Perhaps he's had health problems or something, but he consistently identified Hawker Hurricanes as Spitfires and a Ju-52 as a "Stuka", and also called the Spanish Air Force Heinkel 111's "Messerschmidts". He also misnamed Joseph P Kennedy, Sr. as "Senior Joseph Kennedy"(maybe due to the time spent filming in Spain), as opposed to his correct title of "Bootlegger to the stars". Williams' gaffes were so consistently out there that I was very pleasantly surprised that his comments in the Disc 2 extras "A Film For The Few" and "Authenticity In The Air" were excellent. "A Film For The Few" was great, showing what had to be done to restore many of the aircraft. Also on Disc 2 was a 1969 featurette "Battle For The Battle Of Britain", hosted by co-star Michael Caine(who was born in Rotherhithe, an area badly hit by The Blitz), "Recollections Of An RAF Squadron Leader", with ex-Sqdn Ldr (Basil) Gerald Stapleton, an "Authenticity in the Air" featurette, and a gallery of "images From The Sky". We do get to see Air Marshal Keith Park visiting the film set(although why Douglas Bader goes unidentified is odd), and interviews with a number of ex-RAF types, most notably Peter Townsend, ex-equerry to HM The Queen and ex-fiance to Princess Margaret. I'd give this a solid 4.5 stars, but since this site(in its infinite wisdom)only does whole stars, I've no problem nudging it up to 5. The acting's not great, but with this, it's more than that. One other thing is that though it was produced by an American firm, there's no attempt to overplay the US contribution. I love the USA, but the Brits damn near went it alone in those four months of 1940. For that, I give them 9.5 stars!! | | | | Well done war movie for its era Mar 4, 2010 |

| This movie has so much detail, it almost looks like there is real footage in it. It is done very well. I recommend for everyone to watch it. The planes are outstanding. | | | | You Are There!! Dec 31, 2009 |
If any movie ever benefitted from the appearance of new technology, this one is it. The appearance of Blu Ray high definition formatting makes this movie come alive on the screen. It's almost impossible to remember that this movie was originally shot in 1969, when watching the Hurricanes, Spitfires, Messershmitts and Heinkels roar across the sky in spectacular detail. The original photography done in panavision wide screen must have done a creditable job in presenting this epoch in theaters, but on a wide screen HDTV, in super sharp detail, the film is simply breathtaking. The incredible vistas over the English countryside in ultrarealistic battle scenes are worth the price.
The original cinematographers deserve additional plaudits for the marvelous air battle scenes, that now come alive in Blu Ray.
This movie will be a natural for conversion to the new 3D format. | | | | Wonderful WW II movie. Dec 29, 2009 |
I had watched this movie in the theatres when it originally came out. I was happy to find it in your DVD movies... Excellent quality, exactly as I remember the film from the theatres.... | | | Write your own review about Battle of Britain [Blu-ray]
