Publishers Description
Turn Your Child into a Great Reader!
Are you concerned about your child's reading ability? Does your child hate to read? If so, you are not alone. In fact, 38 percent of American fourth graders are unable to read at a basic level. But now you can turn your nonreader child into a reading star—in just a few short weeks.
Based on research done at Yale, this simple yet revolutionary guide merges the three essential elements of reading instruction: auditory training, phonics, and whole language. Inside, teachers and parents will find easy-to-read cartoons, games, and fun phonic sheets that will help almost any child read at or above grade level. Reading expert Peggy Wilber will show you how to help your child develop better fluency, language skills, and comprehension. You'll learn how to:
Determine your child's specific reading needs Help your child develop comprehension strategies Enhance your child's phonic skills Choose great reading selections at the right level for your child And much more!
"This is an effective, user-friendly program for parents who want to get involved in their child's literacy education." —Doug Wittenberg, executive director, Whiz Kids Tutoring Inc.
"An invaluable tool in helping teachers and parents partner in a most daunting task . . . teaching our children to read with comprehension." —John T. Jenkins, former state senator, Maine
"An invaluable tool for parents and teachers alike—a very comprehensive book!" —Dr. Barbara Swaby, director of the Graduate Reading Program, School of Education, University of Colorado at Colorado Springs
Turn Your Child into a Great Reader!
Peggy Wilber's life mission is to help children succeed to read. She has a bachelor's degree from Bates College, Lewiston, Maine and a master's degree in education from Boston University. Ms. Wilber is certified in Early Childhood Reading Instruction from the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs, where she lives with her husband and two children.
Ms. Wilber has taught and tutored children since the mid-1980s. Motivated by an increasing number of children who needed tutoring in reading, she co-founded the Pikes Peak One+One Program in 1995. This church-based tutoring program provides reading assistance to students from local elementary schools. As Instructional Coordinator, Ms. Wilber trains volunteers, diagnoses students' literacy needs, and creates individualized instructional packets for weekly tutoring sessions.

Realizing that parents (grandparents, day care workers, and older siblings) were an untapped valuable resource, Ms. Wilber created training sessions teaching them how to help their children learn to read. After receiving hands-on information, even the most reluctant, "not sure I'm qualified" parents experience success working with their children. Many children have improved one to three reading levels in a semester.

Believing that every child can learn to read, Ms. Wilber has provided this kid-tested, parent-proven information in her new book Reading Rescue 1-2-3. It is a hands-on manual combining auditory training, phonics and whole language techniques, making a complete reading instructional program.

Peggy Wilber teaches "Reading Stronger" classes at Grace Academy in Colorado Springs. Her web site is www.succeedtoread.com.

Real Reading Help  Jul 24, 2007
This book is wonderful! My child can hardly wait to do the next lesson! This book is a must have tool for parents and educators to help struggling children achieve reading success. I like how simple everything is explained, and my child loves the games and actually reminds me that it is time to do the work!

Helped a Pre-K 4 Student  Jul 22, 2007
I used this book to begin teaching my 4 year old to read in September '06. I used its easy test to determine her reading level was at 1. We worked for several weeks doing 15 minutes or so a day. We first worked on the letter sounds she didn't know and rhyming as they were her weak points. Soon she was reading short three letter books to me. After she was on her way, I went for a parent/teacher conference and let them know what we had been doing at home. The teachers were wonderful and began working with her immediately. I just retested her to see what level she was at and she was beyond the book's levels. Hooray. While this might not be the saving grace for everyone, it certainly did what I wanted. It helped me teach my child to read!

Reading Rescue 1-2-3  Apr 10, 2007
Very good book for children at all grade school levels. This book has some very nice activities that kept my little girl interested for much longer than most other teaching aids and her reading skills have improved! She's just in kindergarten but this book can help her for several more grades.

Reading Rescue  Jul 14, 2006
I was desperate to find something to help my son with his reading. I followed the recommendations in this book to the letter, and did the activities with my son, but did not see any change. I finally had my son tested and they found he had a reading disability. After 2 years of intensive reading instruction at school, and support at home, his reading has improved dramatically. I did not find the dramatic results promised.

Reading improved in 2 months!  Apr 20, 2006
My 9-year-old daughter is a smart young lady. I home school her and she's probably reading at a first grade level. She doesn't dislike reading but she really struggles. She substitutes the third letter of several words for the first and pronounces every letter instead of blending. Because she reads like this she can't comprehend what she was reading. I was at my wits end when a friend recommended this book to me. She is now reading whole words without pronouncing every letter sound and doesn't do the third letter substitution and she can remember what she reads. She is sitting down and reading books by herself. This is just after two months. I am truly amazed.

This has become my reading, writing and spelling curriculum for her and my younger two children. It has fun games that utilize all three of the learning types. My middle child loves the games and asks to play them over and over. My youngest writes his own books that he is able to read and is so proud of.

The author does stress the importance of many phonetic rules but doesn't go into the one's that are only used for a handful of words. She says it's easier to have the child memorize the words instead of the difficult rules. I believe this is the part of the book that some parents have problems with. This is the part of the book that I had some issues with. But after seeing the incredible improvement in my oldest daughter in such a short time I am going to try this approach.
