Item Description...
Overview
A strategy for changing attitudes about personal finances covers such topics as getting out of debt, the dangers of cash advances, and keeping spending within income limits.

Publishers Description
The success stories speak for themselves in this book from money maestro Dave Ramsey. Instead of promising the normal dose of quick fixes, Ramsey offers a bold, no-nonsense approach to money matters, providing not only the how-to but also a grounded and uplifting hope for getting out of debt and achieving total financial health. Ramsey debunks the many myths of money (exposing the dangers of cash advance, rent-to-own, debt consolidation) and attacks the illusions and downright deceptions of the American dream, which encourages nothing but overspending and massive amounts of debt. "Don't even consider keeping up with the Joneses," Ramsey declares in his typically candid style. "They're broke " The Total Money Makeover isn't theory. It works every single time. It works because it is simple. It works because it gets to the heart of the money problems: you. This 3rd edition of The Total Money Makeover includes a fresh cover design, all new personal success stories, and naysayers, and more.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Your grandmother's advice  May 22, 2010
Dave has made quite a name for himself dishing out what used to be known as good old common sense, up until about 20 years ago when suddenly everyone and their dog was supposed to have a credit card, designer clothing and a new house, and the American economy depended on that. He spends most of the first half of the book "ranting" and busting myths, and I was nodding at pretty much everything: don't lend money to friends or relatives (either give money or just say no), buy used cars and run them into the ground, and stay out of debt as much as you can, especially credit card debt and home equity loans. Basically, if you can't afford it, don't buy it! That's what I was brought up on but I guess most people have to read it in a book to believe it.

The rest of the book outlines a plan of attacking one's debt, by first lining up an emergency fund of $1000, then doing a "debt snowball" (listing your debts and paying off the smallest ones first), then building your retirement fund, paying off your house and investing all the fabulous wealth you hopefully now have. For people who have no idea where to get started, it's a series of "baby steps" that makes the task much less dreadful. Dave includes a lot of success stories and worksheets and is very down-to-earth and easy to read. Like many diet/exercise "makeover" books, this is stuff you pretty much already know, but a lot of folks need it repeated and reinforced.

For the Financially Inept  May 21, 2010
I've never heard Dave Ramsey on the radio, or read any of his books, but I have heard great things about him, so decided to check his book out.

This may be a good book for people who have dug themselves into a financial hole. I do disagree with Mr. Ramsey on several points: the 401(k) issue (not contributing up to the matching portion till debt is paid off), his stance on never using credit cards (we pay in full every month and get about $1000 back every year on our annual fee-free, cash back cards), and on only going to college if you can pay cash up front. (I am a stay-at-home, homeschooling mom who plans to go back to work as an empty-nester to help pay off college loans. If we were to save enough now, our standard of living would be very significantly below our current middle-class lifestyle, or I would have to go back to work). These are the ones that come immediately to mind. A friend also mentioned his apparent opinion that one should never use anything but a full-service realtor to sell one's home, and having sold two myself with a flat-fee broker, I most heartily disagree. I believe the statistics he cited are completely misleading, and lead me to look with a skeptical eye other financial advice he may give.

The people I know who love Dave Ramsey fall into two categories: 1) The financially clueless who have dug themselves into a hole and need the knowledge and a huge kick in the rear to get themselves out, and 2) The financially savvy and extremely thrifty who are willing to live substantially below their means, usually at significant personal sacrifice, in order to pay down their mortgages early, etc. If you do not fall into either of those categories, you may be happier with Suze Orman.

Just as most of us would balk at losing weight the way they do on the program "The Biggest Loser," most of us would balk at following Mr. Ramsey's financial advice. It's okay for taking what you want out of it, but there are better, more practical books out there for the average person seeking financial advice.

Absolutely a must have!  May 18, 2010
The total money makeover will change your life if you let it. His principles are basic; live on less than you make. He spends most of the book trying to stress the importance of behavior modification. We all know that we should do it..spend less...but how do we actually get ourselves to do it. If you put math aside and abide by the principles, this will be life changing. I was able to pay off $65,000 of debt using his system over a 15 month period! I guess I never realized I had a problem until somebody pointed out that fact. Turns out I was excellent at making dollars but not real good at keeping them. I think the key to the entire novel is the ability to focus on one thing and kill it. So many of us, including me, were trying to save, pay down debt, put money in 401k and save for college educations. It is the ability to focus on one thing and get a win that makes his message so powerful. I have a CPA license, graduated top of my class, and spent 10 years in public accounting but apparantly lacked the common sense wisdom that he provided. I was so busy trying to use the power of leverage to get wealthy that I didn't see truth behind what was happening. If you allow it, this will transform the way you look at dollars and the ability you have to become wealthy in the future. I do believe that it isn't a goal if you don't write it down; he makes you write it down and implement it. Absolutely outstanding....
